It is prior in time to those which are of any certainty; and the history of the kings of the children of Israel lives, and will live, io holy writ to the end of the world. These books contain an abstract of the history of Judah and Israel under the government of kings from the end of David's reign to the babylonish captivity. Some suppose they were written by the contemporary prophets; or, more probably, they were digested into their present order by Ezra, from those who wrote the annals of their own times. Acts of heroism, battles, and political matters, are less dwelt upon than what regards the temple, religious festivals, the worship of God, the piety of princes, the fidelity of prophets, the punishment of crimes, the manifestation of God's anger agaiust the wicked, and his regard for the righteous. The whole eviuces that " righteousness exalteth a nation, but that sin is a reproach to any people." Abundance of practical instruction is contained therein both for persons in public and private life, nor shall we lose sight of Him to whom all the scriptures bear witness. And because the children of God should not look for continual rest and quietness in this world, the Holy Ghost here sets before our eyes the variation and change of tilings which came to the people of Israel, declaring how flourishing kingdoms fall to decay and come to nought, except they are preserved by God's protection, who mvoureth them when his word is truly set forth, virtue esteemed, vice punished, and concord maintained.
